How often should a septic tank be pumped?

Every 3 to 5 years.

Closer to 3 years

  • More people living in the house
  • A smaller tank
  • Heavy water use
  • A garbage disposal

Closer to 5 years

  • Fewer people in the house
  • A larger tank
  • Light water use
  • Few solids going down the drain

General guidance from the U.S. EPA. Every tank is different, so call and ask what suits yours.

Schedule effortless cleanings every 3-5 years.

A technician in a yellow Michigan Septic shirt kneels at an open septic tank and rinses it with a hose while a green vacuum hose runs down into the tank.

Don't wait for the schedule if you notice

  • Sewage backing up into toilets, drains or sinks
  • Tubs, showers and sinks draining very slowly
  • Gurgling sounds in the plumbing
  • Standing water or damp spots over the tank or drainfield
  • A sewage smell around the tank or drainfield
  • Bright green, spongy grass over the drainfield, even in dry weather

These are the EPA's common signs of a failing system.

What you get

  • Full tank agitation. A powerful auger stirs up the tank before it is pumped.
  • Free filter cleaning. We locate the septic filter and clean it at no charge.
  • Flat-rate pricing. Any pumping up to 1,000 gallons is billed at the 1,000-gallon price. Prices can vary with seasonal weight restrictions or fuel surcharges.
  • Digital pumping reports. We keep a record of every tank we pump, available on request (a charge may apply).

How a new system goes in

We guide you through permitting, soil evaluation, design and installation, and the design and installation are done in-house.

A typical system, simplified. Yours is designed around your soil and your site.
  1. Permitting

We guide you through the permitting.

  2. Soil evaluation

The soil evaluation comes before the design.

  3. Design

    We design the system in-house.

  4. Installation

Our own crew installs the full system and drainfield.

Conventional systems, and custom engineered systems for challenging soil or regulations.

Installation options

  • New construction

A full septic system and drainfield for a new home or commercial property.

  • Full system replacement

For a system that is failing, backing up or outdated. The old one comes out and a new one goes in.

  • Partial repairs and component replacement

A cracked tank with a healthy drainfield, or one part of a drainfield, doesn't need a full overhaul. We assess the system and replace only what's needed.
